Lessons Learned from the Compact

  1. Defending Institutional Autonomy and Academic Freedom are Non-negotiable.
    • Specifically leaning on the idea that freedom to make decisions on admissions, what is taught and how institutions operate are foundational.
    • Higher education has always been about merit and claiming our commitment to diversity and excellence simultaneously is a sign of strength and provides clarity.
    • Has wide public support.
    • Should not be impinged upon by political agendas.
  2. Room for Continuous Improvement is Unanimously Agreed Upon.
    • The sector should work toward enhanced accountability and more access.
  3. Coalitions and partnerships across the sector work.
  4. Moving forward.
    • Compact-like restrictions are bound to find their way into requirements for grant funding and possibly Title IV eligibility.
    • Coalitions between and among all kinds of institutions are necessary.
    • Join the Alliance to help coordinate your institution with others.
