EDU Ledger Features the Alliance’s Mission to Protect the "Fifth Pillar of Democracy"

The March edition of the EDU Ledger Magazine takes an in-depth look at the founding and future of the Alliance for Higher Education, framing the organization’s work as a critical intervention in a "turbulent period" for American colleges and universities. The piece highlights the Alliance’s core vision: establishing higher education as the "fifth pillar of democracy," uniting a broad coalition of leaders from legal, civil rights, and educational spheres, to ensure America’s higher education sector is able to continue to advance the free exchange of ideas and combat authoritarianism and censorship.

"The threat is real and targets higher education’s very purpose," Alliance President and CEO Mike Gavin tells the outlet. He stressed that the movement is about safeguarding the "unfettered pursuit of the truth," arguing that "external curricular revision that erases inconvenient truths in response to partisan pressure is antithetical to higher education’s public purpose and counter to the very notion of a free republic."

Supporting this vision, George Boggs, a member of the Alliance’s board, highlighted the necessity of collective action over individual institutional statements. The article explores how the Alliance seeks to move beyond traditional circles to build a more robust defense of academic freedom, sector autonomy, and, at the most basic level, the ability to teach, learn, and research without fear of censorship or political retribution. Boggs underscores that the commitment to these ideals is not a "fad or a flaw," but is instead "rooted in a methodological approach to provide access and opportunity for all, while advancing the democratic ideals of our country."
